Vierte Tag

Today was the fourth day and our first weekend. Max was still in Church all day, so I went to our activities with his brother.

Today was "Hamburg Tag" for GAPP. We woke up at 6:15-7:00, then ate breakfast and drove about twenty minutest to the ferry station. A ferry took us down the Elbe river, through Hamburg Harbor (Very impressive) and into the downtown. We ate breakfast in the old warehouse district and then broke up into groups for a scavenger hunt. There were four Americans and four Germans in each group.

I found this to be a bit boring- my group members either didn't speak any good German or didn't talk to their partners, and Max wasn't there. The Germans did the scvanger hunt for us. We followed and helped out every once and a while. We were looking for information on historical markers around the downtown. It was a lot of walking- three or four miles, I think.

Then, we went to the city hall. It was very impressive. We sat for a while, listening to a choir that was singing songs about Hamburg, waiting for our teachers (some parents were with us). It started to rain and we ran down into the subway station and went to the city park.

The park and picnic were great. We had lunch/dinner, then we talked and played soccer, American football, or volleyball.

This was quite boring for Max's brother, because he didn't know many of the people. We left a bit early with Mia and Angie, as they were going to go shopping. It took us an hour and fifteen minutes to get home on two different train lines. I did get to see the "hauptbahnhof", or main train station. It was pretty cool on the inside.

Once home, we sat around and watched soccer. It's the first day of the EM, or European Cup. Switzerland vs. Czech Republic and Portugal vs. Turkey. Czech Republic won and the other game isn't finished. Everyone here has German flags on their cars, because Germany plays tomorrow. They say that it's not normal to see German flags, but they'll be everywhere for the next couple of weeks.

The weather is wonderful, but it will cool down soon. The Germans are going to be in for a shock in St. Louis if we have a hot October.

Ich schreibe noch ein post morgen,
Robert

I'm usually up much later than "Dad-O" so I'm going to try and be ther first to comment next time. This is great, but I'm a visual learner, so I need pictures! I agree that the night photo from the airplane was great. I'm glad you're having a good time. German HS sounds a lot like US HS -- at least, the screwing around and trying to get through the filters part. Keep up the great blogging work!
